Morocco Replicates Tanger Med Port’s Success with Nador West Med, L’Opinion Writes

Rabat – Morocco seeks to replicate the success of Tanger Med port with Nador West Med, which has become a major infrastructure hub in the Mediterranean, French daily L’Opinion reported on Wednesday.

Recalling the launch by HRH Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan of operations at the port’s first container terminal, the French newspaper noted that this infrastructure further consolidates the momentum set in motion by Tanger Med.

“Inaugurated in 2007 and continuously expanded since then, the latter was designed to capitalize on Morocco’s exceptional geographical advantage. The country controls the southern shore of the Strait of Gibraltar, a strategic passageway for international trade,” the publication noted.

The development of these infrastructures has turned the northern region of the Kingdom into the country’s second-largest industrial hub, alongside Casablanca, L’Opinion pointed out, adding that Nador West Med “is expected to take over from the Tangier port in container traffic.”

“Currently entirely dedicated to container operations, Nador West Med is coming to the aid of Tanger Med, which has reached saturation point,” port and maritime expert Najib Cherfaoui was quoted as saying by L’Opinion.

Noting that “Tanger Med is a victim of its own success, further boosted by upheavals in the global economy,” the French daily said that with the inauguration of Nador West Med, “Morocco will be able to reap even greater benefits from this windfall.”

The newspaper concluded that the Kingdom, “capitalizing on its exceptional geographical advantage, is banking on Nador West Med to replicate a proven success formula.”
