Morocco’s permanent representative to the UN in New York, ambassador Omar Hilale, received Tuesday in his capacity of chairman of the 3rd committee of the 70th session of UNGA, a delegation from the European Parliament (EP) led by Elena Valenciano, president of the human rights sub-committee at the EP.
The meeting touched on several themes, mainly the situation of refugees in Europe, the upsurge of violent extremism and the reform of the UNHRC.
The two parties agreed on the importance of coordination and complementarity between the UN organs in charge of the promotion of human rights, and the need for cooperation between the UNHRC and the UNGA third committee.
In this regard, he recalled the contribution of Morocco to the UN body’s reform process and underlined the new dynamic of coordination with the UNHRC president Joachim Rucker.
The European delegation lauded Morocco as an example of democracy, the rule of law and tolerance in the MENA region which is facing many challenges.
