Rabat-Salé Airport: Deployment of the “Self Bag Drop” Automated Baggage Drop System (ONDA)

Rabat – Rabat-Salé Airport is now equipped with “Self Bag Drop” automated baggage drop systems, paving the way for a gradual rollout across all airports in the Kingdom, Airports of Morocco (formerly the National Airports Office – ONDA) announced on Friday.

“Following its initial implementation with Royal Air Maroc at Casablanca’s Mohammed V Airport, the Self Bag Drop system is entering a new phase of nationwide deployment. The goal is to progressively roll out this technology to airports throughout the Kingdom in order to reduce waiting times, optimize baggage handling, and offer travelers greater autonomy,” Airports of Morocco stated in a press release.

Rabat-Salé Airport represents the first step in this rollout. Six self-service baggage drop kiosks have just been installed in Terminal 2 for Ryanair passengers. This new installation marks the transition to a broader deployment strategy, poised to permanently transform check-in operations at Moroccan airports.

The system is based on a simple principle. After checking in, travelers can drop off their own luggage in the hold via a guided and fully automated route. According to operational estimates, this technology offers a potential time saving of 50 to 75%.

Nearly two-thirds of passenger traffic at Moroccan airports is now affected by this evolution of the airport experience. This proportion illustrates the system’s transformative potential and the importance of its deployment across the national network.

The rollout of Self Bag Drop complements other advancements undertaken by Airports of Morocco, notably the gradual rollout of mobile boarding passes and the Pax Check system. These solutions simplify every step of the journey, from airport access to boarding, by leveraging proven technologies and streamlined procedures.

“Airports of Morocco is thus making digitalization a tool for performance, quality of service and improvement of the experience of the millions of travelers who use the country’s airports each year,” the statement concludes.
