Belgrade – A commemorative ceremony marking the anniversary of the liberation of Zaječar during the First World War was held on Monday to honor the Serbian, Moroccan, and French soldiers who fell in the line of duty for the liberation of this Serbian city. Their sacrifice remains a lasting testament to the solidarity and shared commitment of nations that fought together for freedom.
The ceremony took place in the presence of, among others, the Moroccan Ambassador to Belgrade, Omar Amghar; the State Secretary of the Serbian Ministry of Labor, Employment, Veterans Affairs and Social Affairs, Dorde Todorov; the Mayor of Zaječar, Vladimir Videnovic; representatives of the Serbian Ministry of Defense; the Military Attaché of the French Embassy; representatives of the Committee for the Preservation of Traditions of the Wars of Liberation of Serbia; and representatives of the Orthodox Church.
On this occasion, Mr. Todorov paid tribute to the Moroccan soldiers who fought alongside their Serbian comrades-in-arms, calling them “heroes and allies of the First World War.” The Serbian official emphasized that “this friendship remains precious and important today, decades after that world war.”
The participation of the Moroccan ambassador in this highly symbolic ceremony reflects the Kingdom’s enduring and unwavering commitment to preserving the memory of its soldiers and honoring their contribution to the shared history of nations.
While highlighting the historical ties forged through sacrifice and solidarity between Morocco and Serbia, this solemn commemoration underscores the importance of honoring the legacy of those who gave their lives for freedom and strengthening the bonds of friendship and mutual respect between nations and peoples.
On this occasion, Mr. Amghar was invited by the mayor of Zaječar to visit the National Museum and the Late Antique site “Felix Romuliana,” an opportunity to explore ways to develop cooperation between the two countries.
The commemorative ceremony took place at the French military cemetery in Zaječar and at the monument dedicated to the inhabitants of Timok who fell during the Balkan Wars and the First World War.
