United Nations (New York) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Living Abroad, Nasser Bourita, announced on Tuesday in New York the Kingdom of Morocco’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2028-2029 term.

In a speech on behalf of Morocco at the general debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Mr. Bourita emphasized that this candidacy reflects the Kingdom’s firm commitment to contributing effectively and responsibly to the maintenance of international peace and security.

The Kingdom’s candidacy, Mr. Bourita emphasized, is based on a realistic and collaborative vision of international cooperation, and in strict compliance with the rules of international law and the principles of national sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.

Furthermore, it draws upon the diplomatic achievements that the Kingdom has accumulated over the centuries, and is founded on the enlightened vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, which aims to solidify Morocco’s position as an essential and reliable actor in promoting stability and achieving sustainable development worldwide, explained Mr. Bourita, who is leading the Moroccan delegation to the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

He added that this candidacy will enable the Kingdom to continue fulfilling its noble mission in service of peace, strengthening the pillars of collective security, and resolutely defending the approach of multilateral action, in full harmony with the purposes and principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.

Morocco’s candidacy represents the culmination of the Kingdom’s tangible and continuous contributions to the consolidation of the triptych on which the international system is based, namely the maintenance of international peace and security, sustainable development and the establishment of the rule of law, Mr. Bourita affirmed.
