Nador West Med, Strategic Maritime Pillar to Ease Congestion at Record-Breaking Tanger Med – French Radio RFI

Paris – Nador West Med is positioning itself as “a new strategic maritime pillar for Morocco, capable of easing congestion at the Tanger Med port complex,” which continues to set records in terms of container traffic, Radio France Internationale (RFI) reported on its website.

Reporting on the launch of operations at Nador West Med’s first container terminal, RFI noted that this major infrastructure project will help “ease congestion” at Tanger Med, in the north of the Kingdom.

According to RFI, the new port of Nador, with a total capacity of more than 5 million containers, will also feature a liquefied natural gas terminal, the first of its kind in Morocco.

The two port projects are both complementary and strategic for the Kingdom, where more than 95% of foreign trade is conducted by sea, the same source continued, noting that the Moroccan economy aims to sustain its growth, particularly in energy flows.

Quoting port strategy expert Yann Alix, RFI said that Tanger Med “may have grown faster than initially planned, but Nador West Med is positioned as a continuation of it, albeit in a different geographical location.”

Nador West Med is designed to serve as a gateway for maritime flows towards Europe’s southern Mediterranean coast, with “major infrastructure capable of accommodating vessels similar to those calling at Tanger Med, namely ships carrying 24,000 containers,” it wrote.

On the Kingdom’s Mediterranean coastline, Nador West Med, whose construction cost nearly $5.5 billion, paves the way for consolidating the momentum set in motion by Tanger Med, through a strategy of complementarity aimed at equipping the Kingdom with diversified, competitive and internationally competitive port infrastructure.
