Istiqlal Party National Council Mandates Secretary-General to Lead Negotiations on Participation in Next Government

Salé – The National Council of the Istiqlal Party decided on Saturday in Salé to mandate the party’s Secretary-General, Nizar Baraka, to lead negotiations on its participation in the next government.

The decision was taken in accordance with the interests of the Nation and citizens, as well as the party’s legitimate aspirations to be a key player in the process of institution-building, economic modernization and social development, enabling it to honor its commitments to citizens, according to the final communiqué issued at the end of the party’s extraordinary National Council session.

Council members welcomed the party’s commitment to contributing to the next phase, emphasizing the need to launch a new reform dynamic in the country to deliver the desired change and have a tangible impact on citizens’ lives, the same source added.

In this regard, National Council President Abdeljebbar Rachidi stressed that “the Istiqlal Party considers that wherever the supreme interest of the Nation lies, the party aligns itself with it and defends it,” noting that the party “today expresses its readiness to contribute to the country’s development and progress dynamic, and to support its political and democratic process.”

He added that the holding of this extraordinary session reflects the importance the Istiqlal Party attaches to the National Council and its commitment to strengthening internal democratic practice by involving its members in decisions concerning matters of strategic importance to the party.

For his part, the party’s Secretary-General, Nizar Baraka, said that the Istiqlal Party’s continued prominent position on the political scene was not the result of chance, but rather the outcome of a track record of achievements by the party, including those achieved during its participation in the previous government.

He added that the party’s participation in any forthcoming government would remain contingent on incorporating the commitments set out in its electoral program into the next government program, stressing that these commitments constitute a political and moral contract with citizens.

Baraka also referred to a number of points of convergence between the Istiqlal Party’s program and that of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), noting that this factor should be taken into account and highlighted as part of the ongoing consultations.

The extraordinary session of the Istiqlal Party National Council was devoted to assessing the results of the September 23, 2026 legislative elections and deliberating on the party’s participation in the next government.
