Bamako – Two Malian soldiers were killed Saturday during an ambush by unidentified gunmen in the Segou region, said official sources.
‘On Saturday around 15h, an escort of armed forces of Mali is ambushed on Nampala Diabaly-axis, 6 km from Toule, common Nampala in the Segou region,’ ‘said a statement from the government, reporting the death of two soldiers.
Four other Malian soldiers were wounded in the ambush, the source said, adding that proceedings have been initiated immediately and the light armament material was recovered. the Malian government condemns’ cowardly and barbaric act will not go unpunished. ” said teh press release.
According to a Malian military source, quoted by the media, assillants’ have planted explosives on the road to stop the convoy and then opened fire on the soldiers. ”
The town of Nampala, near the Mauritanian border, was the scene last January, of an attack by a group of armed jihadists against an army camp.
Northern Mali in 2012 fell under the control of jihadist groups linked to al-Qaida, which were driven largely by the Serval operation, launched in January 2013 at the initiative of France. Weakened these jihadist groups, however, remain active in the region and often lead attacks against the Malian army and the troops of integrated multidimensional United Nations Mission for Stabilization of Mali (Minusma).
