Weather: Thunderstorms and Falling Temperatures in Several Regions of Morocco

Thunderstorms are expected early next week in southern Morocco and southeastern Morocco, according to the General Directorate of Meteorology. Starting Thursday, temperatures are expected to gradually decrease until the beginning of next week.

The weather conditions are expected to remain mixed across Morocco in the coming days. While the west of the country will experience generally calm weather, southern Morocco and the southeast will be affected by thunderstorms. Low clouds and fog patches are also expected near the coasts, accompanied by fairly strong gusts of wind in some areas.

This Monday, October 12, thunderstorms are forecast for southern Morocco. The sky will be partly to occasionally cloudy over the Atlas and Rif Mountains, where a few showers remain possible. Low clouds are expected to form along the Atlantic coast, with a risk of fog or drizzle in some areas. Moderate to strong gusts of wind are also expected along the central coast.

Climate: El Niño could reach record levels between October and December (WMO)

Sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific are expected to reach record levels during the period from October to December 2026, a sign of the rapidly strengthening El Niño phenomenon, which is expected to continue to influence weather patterns, ecosystems, and economies, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

As for temperatures, maximums will range between 8 and 15°C in the Atlas and Rif Mountains, as well as in the southern part of the Oriental region. They will reach 31 to 36°C in the far southeast and the southern Saharan provinces. Temperatures will range from 23 to 31°C in northern Oriental, the Moulouya Valley, the northern and central Atlantic plains, the Mediterranean coast, the Saïss region, the Souss region, the rest of the southeast, and some southern areas. Elsewhere, temperatures will range from 15 to 21°C.

On Tuesday, a few scattered showers may still affect the High Atlas Mountains and the far south of Oriental, under partly cloudy skies. Low clouds, accompanied by fog or drizzle in places, are also expected along the Mediterranean coast, in the Rehamna region, and along the Atlantic coast.

The wind will blow moderately to rather strongly in the Tangier region, on the central and southern coasts, and in the southeast. Temperatures are expected to rise slightly across most of the country.

On Wednesday, showers could resume in the southern part of the Oriental region and the southeast, with a risk of thunderstorms. In the Atlas Mountains, the sky will remain partly cloudy to occasionally cloudy, while the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts will experience further periods of low cloud, accompanied by fog or drizzle in some areas.

Moderate to strong gusts of wind are expected in the Tangier region, the Gharb and Saïss plains, the southeast, and the Saharan provinces. Maximum temperatures are expected to rise slightly in the northern and central Atlantic plains, in the western Saharan provinces, and in the southern part of the Oriental region, while remaining relatively stable elsewhere.

From Thursday onward, the weather conditions are expected to gradually change. On Thursday and Friday, the sky will be partly cloudy in the Atlas Mountains, the Oriental region, and the southeast. Later, the weather will become more changeable in the northern half of the country.

Moderate to fairly strong gusts of wind could still affect parts of the Tangier region and the Saharan provinces.

This change will be accompanied by a slight and gradual decrease in maximum temperatures, which should continue until Tuesday, October 20. A slight rise in temperatures is expected afterward.
