Increase in Morocco Consumer Price Index in May 2015

Rabat – The consumer price index (CPI) recorded during the month of May, a slight increase of 0.2 pc compared to April, said Monday the High Planning Commission (HCP).

This variation is due to the increase in the index of food products (0.2 pc) and the index of non-food products (+0.3 pc), said the HCP in a note to the CPI for May.

The increases in food observed between April and May 2015 relate mainly fruits with 4.2 pc and fish and seafood (+ 3.4 pc), says the note.

However, the HCP noted declines in prices of food products by 2.2 pc for those vegetables and meats and “coffee, tea and cocoa” (-0.3 pc).

For non-food products, the increase mainly affected fuel prices with 5.1 pc.

The highest increases in CPI were recorded in Meknes and Tangier with 0.6 pc in Agadir and Rabat (+0.5 pc), Kenitra (0.4 pc) and Casablanca and Settat (+ 0.3 pc).

However, decreases were recorded in Beni Mellal with 1 pc, Guelmim (-0.7 pc) and Dakhla (-0.6 pc), the source said.

Compared to the same month of the previous year, the consumer price index was up by 2 pc in May, reflecting the increase in the index of food products 3 pc and that of non-food products (+ 1.3 pc).

For non-food products, changes ranged from a decline of 1.9 pc in the transport an increase of 4.8 pc in housing, water and electricity.

Under these conditions, the inflation indicator underlying, which excludes volatile price products and public tariffs to products, have experienced during the month of May an increase of 0.1 pc compared to April Last and by 1.3 pc compared to May, 2014.
