FIFA Ranking: Morocco Now 7th in the World, Africa Progresses in the Top 50

Zurich – The Moroccan national football team has climbed to 7th place in the FIFA world rankings, according to the October edition published Wednesday. This ranking is notable for the significant progress made by CAF teams in the Top 50.

Thanks to two victories in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2027) qualifiers and a draw in a friendly match, the Moroccan national team improved its score to 1805.34 points.

This new ranking is largely due to Portugal’s impressive performance. Having made the most significant jump in the top 10, thanks to six Nations League victories, the Portuguese have reclaimed 5th place (+2), which they had lost in July, overtaking Brazil (6th, -1) and Morocco (7th, -1).

At the continental level, Morocco continues to dominate the African rankings, followed by Senegal in 18th place globally (unchanged) and Egypt, which drops to 25th place (-1).

The October edition takes into account 338 international matches played since the end of the World Cup on July 19. These matches, which included UEFA and Concacaf Nations League games as well as qualifying matches for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, had a significant impact on this edition of the rankings, FIFA explained in a statement.

At the top of the rankings, Spain (1st), the reigning world champions, extended their lead. They are followed by Argentina (2nd), runners-up in the 2026 World Cup, now nearly 40 points behind, France (3rd), and England (5th).

In the top 20, the most significant jump was that of Switzerland (12th, +2), which now sits ahead of Germany (13th, -1) and Croatia (14th, -1). Like World Cup champions Spain, the Seleção das Quinas and the Nati have won all four of their matches played in the UEFA Nations League.

Africa is well represented in the top 50 thanks to two of its representatives: Mali (47th, +6) and South Africa (48th, +6). Both teams entered the top 50, climbing six places each. Greece also made an impressive leap (41st, +5), remaining undefeated in its last four matches.

According to FIFA, the performances of Mali and South Africa have also altered the distribution of the top 50 by confederation. CAF now has 10 representatives in this very exclusive club, having gained ground on UEFA (24, -1) and CONMEBOL (8, -1), which each lost one nation, respectively the Czech Republic (51st, -3) and Peru (53rd, -3). AFC and Concacaf still each have four teams among the top 50 nations, while OFC teams remain largely outside the world’s top 50.

The Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches also saw significant changes, notably benefiting Rwanda (119th, +9), Guinea-Bissau (124th, +8), Gambia (109th, +7), Botswana (141st, +6), and Mozambique (98th, +5).

It is also worth noting the progress of nations from other continents, for example the Dominican Republic (135th, +9), Guyana (142nd, +8), Northern Ireland (64th, +6), Estonia (122nd, +5) and Barbados (174th, +5). Most of these teams have won at least two matches in the current edition of the UEFA Nations League or the Concacaf Nations League.
