Rabat – The Secretary-General of the House of Representatives, President of the Association of Secretaries-General of African Parliaments (ASGAP), is chairing the Association’s 7th annual meeting, held on Tuesday and Wednesday at the seat of the Pan-African Parliament in Midrand, South Africa.
This meeting, which forms part of the efforts to bolster cooperation and joint action between parliamentary administrations in Africa, is focused on three complementary sub-themes, the House said in a press release.
The first, to be presented by El Khadi, is themed “The Role of the Secretary-General in 21st-Century Africa,” where participants will discuss the challenges facing secretaries-general in the era of digital transformation and modern governance, including the adaptation of skills and competencies, transformational and ethical leadership, and institutional change management, the same source added.
The second sub-theme focuses on raising awareness of African Union treaties related to the 2026 theme, “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.”
The third theme, “Artificial Intelligence and the Organization of Parliamentary Work,” will see participants explore the opportunities this technology offers for modernizing legislative processes, improving access to parliamentary information and documents, and supporting research and institutional decision-making.
The talks are drawing on comparative case studies from African and international parliaments, and discussing the conditions for the responsible and ethical adoption of these technologies and their implications for data governance and cybersecurity, as well as strengthening the capacities of general secretariats to utilize them effectively.
The meeting is expected to yield a number of outcomes, including the development of a shared understanding of the opportunities, risks, and conditions for the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence in parliamentary work; a shared vision for the evolution of the Secretary-General’s role and competencies in the 21st century.
