Morocco was elected June 17 for the third consecutive time, to chair the Working Group on the third “Response and management of nuclear and radiological incidents” of the Global Initiative to fight against nuclear terrorism (IGLTN).
This decision, taken unanimously during the proceedings of the 9th plenary meeting of the IGLTN held on 16 and 17 June in Helsinki, is the culmination of Morocco’s commitment to the activities of the Initiative which is currently one of the important foundations of the international system of fight against nuclear terrorism.
This plenary session was also marked by the adoption of a policy paper prepared by Morocco as chair of the 3rd group, in consultation with the IGLTN partners.
Entitled “Fundamentals for the establishment and maintenance of a framework for nuclear security response: guide of good practices IGLTN”, this document represents an essential contribution to strengthening the international preparedness and response system for emergencies radiological and nuclear.
It builds on the findings of three case studies conducted worldwide, including those of the international exercise “ConvEx-3” called “Bab Al Maghrib” (Gate of Morocco), jointly organized by Morocco and the IAEA in 2013, challenging the response and mitigation of illicit trafficking of nuclear and radiological materials.
Morocco was represented at the high-level political meeting with a large delegation, headed by the Director of the United Nations and International Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Azzedine Farhan and composed of representatives of different departments and civilians safe.
