Third day of inter-Libyan political talks in Skhirate

The 3rd day of inter-Libyan political talks bringing together representatives of the various parties to the conflict in Libya, under United Nations auspices, ended Sunday night in Skhirate, a suburb of Rabat.

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Libya, Bernardino Leon met separately, late afternoon, with parties to review documents in the agenda of the negotiations, concerning arrangements security and the establishment of a national unity government.

The UN envoy also held during the day informal meetings with the parties focused on finding a political solution to the conflict in the country.

The parties resumed their discussions when the situation on the ground continues to deteriorate, particularly following the recent military attacks against the capital Tripoli and other parts of the country.

Speaking at a press conference Sunday shortly before resuming its contacts with the parties, the UN mediator said he was “concerned” about the military escalation, stressing the need to “speed up” the talks.

Inter-Libyan political negotiations had resumed Friday morning in Skhirate, with the participation of representatives of the various parties to the conflict in the presence of several foreign ambassadors as observers under the auspices of the United Nations.

Mr. Leon continues to meet separately with delegations in order to reconcile the positions of the representatives of the General National Congress (NMC) said “Parliament of Tripoli” and the internationally recognized parliament says “parliament of Tobruk” and independent traders .

Among the main items on the agenda of the talks include in particular the establishment of a cease-fire, the restoration of security, disarmament of armed groups and the formation of a national unity government.
