Arab Union Lawyers Reaffirms Support for Morocco's Autonomy Proposal to Settle Sahara IssueThe Arab Lawyers Union (ALU) reaffirmed its support for the autonomy proposal under Moroccan sovereignty in order to settle the artificial conflict around the Moroccan Sahara.

In a statement issued after the meeting of its permanent office, held in Damascus, the ALU expressed its “support for Morocco’s efforts to achieve a peaceful and comprehensive solution to the conflict around the Moroccan Sahara, through the granting of a large autonomy to the southern provinces within the framework of the territorial unity of the Kingdom.”

The Cairo-based Union rejected “any foreign interference” in this issue, calling for the opening of the Morocco-Algeria border, with due regard to good neighbourliness.”

In a statement to MAP on Thursday, the Union stressed the need to “recover the cities of Ceuta and Melilla as well as the Jaafarin Islands”, and to find “urgent solution” in order to put an end to this occupation.

The ALU also lauded the “reform of the judicial system” in Morocco, noting that this reform “constitutes a legal momentum and a qualitative leap forward.”
