Morocco Holds the Presidency of the UfM Parliamentary Assembly
Lisbon – Morocco has taken ,on Tuesday, the rotating presidency of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), for a term of one year, in Lisbon Portugal.
The rotating presidency of the UfM was assigned to Morocco at the end of the work of the 11th plenary session of the meeting held under the topic “immigration, asylum and human rights in the Euro-Mediterranean Region” in which takes part parliamentarians from over 40 countries of the UfM.
The Summit of Presidents and the plenary session of the PA-UfM, which were held at the invitation of the President of the Portuguese Parliament and President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the UfM (PA-UfM), Maria da Assunção Esteves, also saw the participation of presidents of parliaments and parliamentarians of member countries of the UfM.
Created at a summit held in Paris in July 2008, the Union for the Mediterranean was eventually absorb the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership (Euromed also says or Barcelona Process), which had existed since 1995 and gave the region a part of multilateral cooperation.
The PA-UfM, which Morocco is a member, is the parliamentary organ of the Union and that role is to provide a framework for multilateral cooperation between the elected representatives of the EU and those of the southern partner countries the Mediterranean.
It also aims to boost the development of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership, exercise control over the actions and projects of this partnership and pass resolutions and recommendations to the ministerial conference of the UfM.
