President Obama says the U.S. and countries around the world must discredit the ideologies that fuel violent extremism.

The president made the closing remarks at a summit on countering violent extremism at the White House and focused on ways to prevent individuals from joining extremist groups.

Obama said terrorist organizations are desperate for legitimacy and that’s why they portray themselves as holy warriors, in order to recruit members.

“We must never accept the premise that they put forward, because it is a lie, nor should we grant these terrorists the religious legitimacy that they seek. They are not religious leaders; they’re terrorists. And we are not at war with Islam. We are at war with people who have perverted Islam.”

Obama highlighted four key areas to countering extremism and propaganda including; confronting extremist ideology, addressing the economic and political grievances in countries that terrorist groups exploit, and stepping up community outreach to those who are vulnerable.

The president emphasized the need for community and faith based leaders to connect to disillusioned individuals. In turn, Obama said, the government will increase outreach to communities to raise awareness. EBU-2015_3008290-thumbnail-1-23260615-Obama_terror
