Rabat – Hicham Balaoui, the King’s Prosecutor General at the Court of Cassation and President of the Public Prosecution Office, highlighted on Wednesday in Rabat the issues surrounding artificial intelligence in the judicial field, noting that AI is playing an increasingly prominent role in our daily lives and is gradually transforming many sectors, including justice.
Speaking at a high-level international seminar initiated by Morocco’s Court of Cassation, in partnership with the Association of the Highest Courts of Cassation of Countries Sharing the Use of French (AHJUCAF), Balaoui highlighted the opportunities offered by these technologies in legal research, case-law analysis, case processing, judicial case management and support for investigations.
These applications can help improve procedural efficiency and facilitate the work of justice professionals, according to a statement from the Presidency of the Public Prosecution Office.
On this occasion, he also stressed the need to regulate the use of these technologies in order to prevent risks associated with the automation of judicial decisions and preserve the central role of human intervention in the judicial process.
Addressing the fundamental safeguards that must accompany this digital transformation, Balaoui recalled the imperative of reconciling technological innovation with respect for the rule of law, judicial independence, fundamental rights and freedoms, and the protection of personal data.
He also emphasized the importance of safeguarding professional secrecy and the confidentiality of judicial information through rigorous security and oversight mechanisms.
