Spanish Popular Party Won Municipal and Regional Elections

Madrid- The Popular Party (PP in power) won the municipal and regional elections held Sunday in Spain, but with a decline in terms of votes compared to the election of 2011, according the results for 94.26 pc of the votes counted, published in the evening.

According to the results provided by the Interior Ministry, the PP, led by Mariano Rajoy, won 26.87 per cent of the votes, followed by Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE opposition) headed by the economist Pedro Sanchez, with 25.15 per cent of vote and the young party “Ciudadanos” (citizens, center), the young Catalan, Albert Rivera, who was credited with 6.54 pc voices. The party of the United Left (IU) is, meanwhile, credited with 4.78 pc of votes, according to results.

In the municipal elections of 2011, the Popular Party obtained with 8,476,138 votes (37.54 pc) with 26,507 advisers while the PSOE was in power had 6,275,314 votes (27.79 per cent of the vote) and 21 766 councilors , will be recalled.

Turnout in the election was 64, 66 pc at the close of polling stations at 20:00 (hl), according to data of the Ministry of Interior. This rate reached 66.16 pc in elections of May 2011.

More than 35 million voters, about 46.5 million inhabitants, 34 million Spaniards, 440,000 citizens of the European Union and 22 700 citizens of other countries, were called to the polls to elect 8,122 mayors, 67,460 elected 802 local and regional deputies.

The regional elections were held in 13 Spanish regions except the regions of Catalonia, the Basque Country, Galicia and Andalusia.

Some 57,700 offices, 209,000 ballot boxes in a total of 23,322 electoral colleges have been set up for the voting operation which was mobilized 90,000 police officers and Civil Guard to ensure security during the Election Day.
