Morocco, which already has over 1,500 kilometers of highways, plans to build nearly a thousand additional km by2016, with a cost of at least 31.5 billion dirhams.
A plan to create “four new roads” to form the basis of the new “road map expected in early 2016” was presented in recent days during a “strategy meeting” between the Ministry of Transport and offices study.
At a cost of between 31.5 and 44.5 billion dirhams, it will concern notably the construction of approximately 400 km of highway between Safi and Marrakech via Beni Mellal.
Another route would connect Agadir, the great seaside resort to Guelmim, the gateway to the Sahara, some 200 km, according to the same source. Strengthening the Rabat-Casablanca axis is also envisaged. The current highway already has six channels, but the continual increase in traffic (over 50 000 vehicles a day) “causes congestion.”
A new highway section to be inaugurated this year, between El Jadida and Safi. The work, however, taken several weeks late.
