Building Project of Joint Border Management Between Mauritania & Mali

Nouakchott – Mauritania and Mali launched Friday a project of capacity building of joint border management and protection of populations living on both sides of the area, through a Japanese grant .

The project, whose funding amounts $ 3 million over 24 months, focuses on supporting the capacity of departments responsible for monitoring the border area, the police in particular, through training programs, exchange experience, improving coordination mechanisms and reconciliation between neighboring populations.

Last April, the Japanese government had allocated the sum of 11.8 million dollars to help Mauritania in particular to provide protection and humanitarian support to refugees and the fight against terrorism.

The Head of Delegation of the International Organization for Migration in Mauritania explained that the management of migration flows and border controls are especially important in the light of UN figures asserting the existence of 232 million migrants in the world.

Mauritania, which shares a long border area with Mali, needs to be supported for hosting Malian refugees and better border control.
